The Prevalence Myopia
It’s estimated that myopia affects nearly 30% of Canadians and that number is likely to increase to 52% by 2050.
The onset of myopia typically occurs in children between the ages of 6–7. Because your child’s vision is essential to their learning and development, slowing down the progression of myopia is important for a future of clear vision.
Our team is passionate about overall eye health and providing children with the tools to see and achieve their best. Regular eye exams are the important first step in detecting myopia.
What is Myopia?
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is the ability to see close up objects clearly but objects far away are blurry.
As the eye develops, myopia can occur if your eyeball becomes too long or your cornea has too much curvature. This creates a refractive error and light is not able to properly focus on the retina.
Orthokeratology
Orthokeratology, known as Ortho-k for short, is the use of specialty contact lenses designed to temporarily reshape the cornea and slow the progression of myopia. Our team uses Paragon CRT lenses, the first FDA approved contact lenses for overnight use, so your child can wake up the next morning with clear vision that lasts throughout the day.
We see the advantages of Ortho-k lenses in children who find success in the classroom and can play sports without the need for glasses or traditional contact lenses.
We use the BE FREE Advanced Ortho-K Lens System to get the most accurate information about the shape of your cornea to customize your contact lenses for optimized results.
Our Myopia Control Methods
Controlling myopia is important for the future of your child’s vision. Untreated myopia can lead to lasting vision problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, or retinal detachment. We provide a number of treatment options to properly focus light and reduce the signals that cause the eye to grow longer.
Ortho-K
Ortho-K specialty contact lenses are designed to temporarily reshape the cornea and slow the progression of myopia. These contact lenses are worn while you sleep, so you can wake up the next morning with clear vision that lasts throughout the day.

MiyoSmart Glasses
The lenses in MiyoSmart glasses use a revolutionary technology known as Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS). DIMS technology includes a focus area and a defocus area that allows the lens to correct the refractive error and slow down the progression of myopia at the same time.
MiSight
MiSight contact lenses are single-use lenses that provide clear vision while slowing down the elongation of the eye. Dr. Akerman is a certified practitioner for MiSight lenses.
These contact lenses are worn throughout the day and can be worn by children as young as 8 years old.
Atropine
Low-dose atropine eye drops can be used to effectively manage myopia. These drops are typically given at bedtime.
We Can Win as a Team
Scheduling regular eye exams throughout your child’s development can help monitor and treat any changes to the eye. Our diagnostic technology and variety of treatment options make us a one-stop shop for eye care.
When your child wins, we all win. Together, we can slow down the progression of myopia.
